January Week Two:

“One never knows what each day is going to bring. The important thing is to be open and ready for it.” Henry Moore (1898-1986), Sculptor. One never knows how good an author is until you’ve read the book.

Has anyone seen the movie Hoodwinked? Talk about a very funny movie based on the story of Little Red Riding Hood. The frog detective says something like, “Never judge the cover of the book because one never knows the story of the book until you flip the pages”. So this short story is told from four different sides and a pattern emerges that leads them to the bandit. I love good movies that are from books! Like A Night at the Museum is another one. A must see movie for all ages!

So last time I mentioned Body Double and the next book in line was Vanish by Tess Gerritsen. Again, she almost knocked me off my seat with this thriller. I had a really hard time putting this one down and ooh-la-la, I liked reading more about FBI agent Gabriel Dean, who happens to be Jane Rizzoli’s husband.

My favorite paragraph is when pregnant Jane puts cuffs on a perp she is testifying against in court. He gets out of control and agitated by her testimonial so the guards are trying to get him out of the courtroom when he goes berserk. Jane saves the day and Tess tickled my funny bone with the next event after the cuffing. Oh, I won’t tell, you’ll have to read the series. Which, if you haven’t caught on by now from my writing, is a must read. The Surgeon, The Apprentice, The Sinner, Body Double, Vanish and Mephisto Club.

So while I am waiting to get my hands on the last book in that series I picked up Savannah Blues by Mary Kay Andrews. What a hoot this book is. Full of Southern charm and romance. I have been laughing through every chapter because Weezie is a pill of a character. She gets into more trouble and I mean man trouble without even trying.

I forgot to mention that not only do I push the please go to your local public library business but I am an avid children’s book reader. I have two children who I read to often plus I am always looking for books they can read. I have been reading teen books too like Meg Cabot’s The Mediator series and Anthony Horowitz’s Alex Rider series. Both series are great for that young teen in your house. The newest books I have found to read to my children are When Santa Fell to Earth by Cornelia Funke, The Adventures of Vin Fiz by Clive Cussler and The Case of the Toilet Decorator by M. Masters.

This last book has a new mystery to solve in each chapter with either a sketch of the crime or a piece of a clue. If you know the answer or don’t know the answer you can flip to the back pages and hold the book up to a mirror to read. My son and I have read two stories so far and we are having a really good time together.

Hey, how serious are you on the reading scene? Take a quiz by going to this web page www.bookbrowse.com/quiz/

Mine said, “Involved reader - You don’t just love books, you love to read about books. For you, half the fun of reading is the thrill of the chase-discussing new books and authors, and discussing your finds with others. If you don’t already belong to a book club you probably should consider joining one, or even starting your own.”

Well, what a coincidence? I started Avoca Book Club and I joined Ladies Novel just to chat about books and find new ones. The thrill is to find a great book for everyone to read and rush to the library to check it out. I do inquire if a title or two has been moving with my weekly articles in the Journal Herald. It’s a quest!!! Besides searching the computer for new titles, I also read the catalogs I receive from Mystery Guild, Literary Guild, Doubleday and Rhapsody. Yes, sometimes it’s just too easy to order new books from the computer and super fun waiting for the mail to arrive with my new books. One day, when I got some books in the mail, my daughter asked me how the postman knew I liked books. Every now and then I still call my postman “Santa” and we laugh all over again.

Hey, it works all the way around and remember I still stop into the library to check out books. I still get more excited when I go to the bookstore because I can visually see rows and rows of books just waiting for me to touch and crack open the binders. “Books to the ceiling, Books to the sky, My pile of books is a mile high. How I love them! How I need them! I’ll have a long beard by the time I read them.”- Arnold Lobel. Well, I hope not a beard, that would be silly! Okay, now get busy trying to get your nose into the next great book. Remember, check back often my friends.
